A marker in angle brackets that opens or closes an element.

A closer look at the concept

Opening tags can carry attributes. Closing tags have a slash before the name; void elements do not use closing tags.

SIMPLE EXAMPLE

<h2> is an opening tag; </h2> is a closing tag.
