Alternative text

alt · alternative text

Text conveying an image’s function or meaning when the image cannot be seen.

A closer look at the concept

Alt depends on context. Informative images need useful descriptions; purely decorative images usually use empty alt.

SIMPLE EXAMPLE

A process diagram needs explanation. A decorative star does not need to be announced.
